So I’m watching Mulan and— because all paths lead to Teen Wolf apparently— Captain Shang totally reminds me of Derek. All gruff and to-the-point but secretly kind of a dork and also really bad with people. “Um. You. You fight good,” anyone?
I think I’d really like a sort of feudal AU where werewolves make up an elite military force and Stiles joins up (to spare his father maybe? i don’t even know).
He’s done his research, right? He has a full range of pheromone-laden cologne that he can plan ahead on using at the appropriate times— angry wolf, nervous wolf, happy wolf, horny wolf. Obviously he can’t shift but that’s not a dealbreaker because they just assume he’s a runt. Runts aren’t as strong or as fast as other werewolves, in fact they’re not much more than ordinary humans. But someone’s got to do the dirty jobs, right?
The thing about Stiles, though, is that he’s impossible. He’s suposed to be at the bottom of the pecking order, barely more than an omega. But you see him out there bossing the betas around, using his words to dance his way in and out of giving offense and then gone before they can realize what just happened. He’s always pushing, constantly pushing. The thing about Stiles is that he’s usually the smartest person in the room and werewolves are notorious for relying on their brawn rather than brains. Basically, there isn’t a no he can’t turn into a maybe, and it’s just patience and determination to get that to a yes.
His loud mouth, hyperactive tendencies, and incurable sass would be enough to give Captain Hale—Derek— grey hairs. Top it all off with Stiles refusal to submit— oh sure, he bares his throat and gives off all the right cues but Derek doesn’t for a second think it’ll stop Stiles from doing whatever the hell he has planned to do anyway.
And Derek is torn between wanting to strangle the little shit and wanting to lock him away in a cabin somewhere because he’s reckless and brave and beautiful and he’s going to get hurt.
For Stiles, the hard part isn’t the lying. His dad’s a wer, he totally knew the ins and outs of deflection, omission, and half-truths by the time he was 15. Plus his heartbeat’s kind of naturally over the place so it’s hard to get a baseline on him anyway. The pheromones aren’t hard either, though it’s draining to always have to keep track. The hard part isn’t even dealing with his bunk-buddy Scott.
Scott, by the way, is ridiculous. Well— it’s not that he isn’t totally awesome. He totally gets Stiles’ sense of humor and he doesn’t treat Stiles different from any other werewolf. It helps that he’s kind of slow on the uptake so Stiles isn’t worried that he’ll catch on to the secret. By the end of the first week, it feels like they’ve known each other forever.
(The problem is that Scott has this whole Romeo and Juliet romance going on with a member of the king’s personal guard. Technically the wolf troops and the human guards are on the same side— the wolves fight the bigger battles and the guards the small ones; like tracking down feral wers in the woods outside the city gates and dealing with attempted assassinations inside the gates. The reality is that they’re… less than friendly.)
For Stiles, the hard part is that for the first time in his life, he’s found a place where he feels like he could belong, but he knows it can’t last.
