Going to The Hobbit midnight showing tonight!! In celebration of that fact, there are five fic recs below. Each one one is an absolute treasure and they are in a range of genres; angst, comedy, drama, adventure, and domestic.
Sansûkh by determamfidd
The battle was over, and Thorin Oakenshield awoke, naked and shivering, in the Halls of his Ancestors. The novelty of being dead fades quickly, and watching over his companions soon fills him with grief and guilt. Oddly, a faint flicker of hope arises in the form of his youngest kinsman, a Dwarf of Durin’s line with bright red hair.
(Follows the story of the War of the Ring).
(Bagginshield, Gimli/Legolas) In which recovery takes time, the dead members of the Company take to watching Gimli as though he’s a soap opera, the living struggle with being left behind, Legolas is confused, Khuzdul is abused, and Thorin is four feet and ten inches of guilt and anger.
Be prepared to have tissues. I cried in pretty much every chapter, but I still love this fic enough to have re-read it twice. Angst abounds because Thorin is full of guilt for succumbing to the gold-lust— but it’s a good angst? Because he’s growing as a person and overcoming his flaws, even if it didn’t happen until after he died. Amazing depiction of the dwarvish afterlife, which has basically become my headcanon. WIP and the slow-burniest slow-burn of Thorin/Bilbo since the war of the ring isn’t even over yet and I’m dying to find out what happens when Bilbo sails off to Valinor. Also, Gimli is the best. Everyone agrees.
Beneath the Ever-Bending Sky by Leupagus
When Thorin summons the company to the Lesser Hall and Bilbo explains what she wants done, there is a long silence, followed by thunderous argument.
“I suppose we shouldn’t have expected better,” Bilbo mutters as Óin and Dwalin bellow at each other.
It’s typical, Thorin thinks, and is disgusted with himself for the rush of fondness he feels.
Rule 63 Bilbo, who has some demands to make of her husband Thorin. This fic has my favorite pov with Thorin being terrifyingly fond of Bilbo and completely subject to her whims, to his unending frustration. It has a fantastic full cast of characters, including Thorin’s sister Dís, Tauriel, and Legolas. Also life-and-death struggles re: the One Ring. If I were to quote my favorite parts, I’d end up copy/pasting the whole fic. But this section I think accurately sums up Bilbo and Thorin’s relationship:
“I thought we just settled this,” Thorin protests, because the first words she’s written in the strange, rounded letters of the halflings are “To The Most Gracious Lord.” Whenever she writes to Bard she starts it with “To the Great Bowman” and when she writes to Dain (which Thorin would very much like to forbid) it is always “My Dear Friend and Cousin” (which Thorin would very much more like to forbid).
“No, you whined at me for a bit and I am inviting him anyway,” Bilbo replies, and Thorin goes to find Glóin — acting as guard-captain in Dwalin’s absence — to see about increasing the number of highly visible weapons each ceremonial guard can get away with carrying during the festivities.
Clarity of Vision by mithen
In a Middle-Earth where Erebor never fell, a shadow remains in the heart of the Lonely Mountain. Bilbo Baggins finds himself drawn reluctantly into a quest that will lead him across the continent—from Bree to Lake Evendim to the icy North and beyond—with a party of five dwarves searching for an artifact that will cure the ailing King Thrór.
Quite an adventure story, for all that Thorin is going from library to library in research for a cure to gold-lust to save his family, instead of a quest to Erebor. They end up traveling from Fornost in the fallen kingdom of Arnor to the island of Himring in the Great Sea, to Lothlorien, and now, at last, the Shire itself. Utterly DELIGHTFUL characterization— seriously, Bilbo strikes an absolutely perfect balance between traditional hobbit sensibilities and hidden reserves of bravery. Thorin is a jerk who makes really horrible first impressions, and his bad behavior is never excused because of a tragic backstory like it is in a lot of fics, but he and Bilbo become friends in spite of themselves. Everything is amazing and epic (and Thorin gets a hold of the One Ring and asdfghjkl I don’t want to spoil it but how that works out and how Thorin overcomes it is flawless).
This fic has almost everything I ever wanted; a crazy slow burn with Thorin and Bilbo getting to know each other (still no makeouts I am dying here), Thorin teaching Bilbo khuzdul, Thorin speaking the elvish language but not happy about it, a good understanding of the geography of Middle Earth, Thorin overcoming the gold-lust without the cure (though I spent several chapters wanting to shout at the characters, it’s a fucking flower!)
WIP, but the latest chapter isn’t a cliffhanger and feels somewhat resolved.
(Un)Familiar Ground by The Feels Whale (miscellea)
The Shire is spread out at Bilbo’s feet like a green duvet that stretches out as far as the eye can see. The air is full of birdsong and the indistinct murmur of a small town; conversation, laughter, and squabbling all blending together into a single cohesive whole.
‘Is this the undying land?’ Bilbo wonders and pinches himself. It feels real. It feels too real. If feels… familiar.
The BEST time travel fix-it fic EVER WRITTEN. Bilbo is smart and utterly determined and Thorin is both irritated and bemused by this wee hobbit that won’t be intimidated by him or anyone else. And aside from FLAWLESS CHARACTERIZATION I also really love this fic because it’s not just a rehash of canon elements— Bilbo was sent back for a purpose, and he’s not the only one to have memories of a life once lived. Things start to happen very differently right from the beginning.
WIP that is killing me because when it last left off GIMLI SHOWED UP and I’m cry.
The Road Delivered Us Home by keelywolfe
In the years since Bilbo left Erebor, he has lost his respectability, gained a nephew, and gotten on with life at Bag End.
He’d left aside adventure for the comforts and peace of his little Hobbit hole, and for the love of a child who needed him. Though perhaps, adventures can yet find him.
Everyone Thorin lives au! Bilbo has adopted Frodo when Thorin and Dwalin come visiting, and stay for several months. Domestic fluff and humor that is so unbelievably good for my soul, you have no idea. Featuring Thorin that is exasperatedly fond of Bilbo and Frodo, and Dwalin being both good with wee hobbits and completely unimpressed with Thorin’s majesty, and also clothing porn when Bilbo takes Thorin to his tailor. Bilbo/Thorin plus a hilarious Dwalin/suprise pairing. Give me all the fics with Thorin reading books from the Bag End library and taking naps in the parlor and helping Bilbo in the garden! /grabby hands
