Where is the good Harry Potter fanfiction hiding? The amazing, well written, fluffy stuff with great characters and moments? I know it must be out there somewhere on ao3 but whenever I try to venture in I can only find... weird, weird stuff. Any help would be greatly appreciated :) You are one of my fave fanfic authors so I figured I would give asking you a go x

I’m so sorry - I don’t think I’ve ever read a purely HP fic (and I’m assuming fusions wouldn’t count although I’ve read a few fantastic ones!)

All I can do is point you at a reccer I follow for TW who also recs HP and that might give you a starting point/some good fics you haven’t read: blue_meridian.

Oh. This kind of question makes me so sad. Because it reminds me that there is a whole generation of fandom out there that probably doesn’t know about the wonder of Polyamorous Recs. Run by Nestra  and Shrift, this is where you’ll find better-than-solid recs for all the classics of mid-to-late 90s and early 2000s fandom. HP, Due South, The Sentinel,  Buffy & Angel, Sports Night, Highlander, Smallville, and then tons of newer stuff and smaller fandoms too.

Sure, some links are dead now, but my god, it was LIFE BLOOD for the multi-fannish reader looking for fic “back in the day.”  They’ve got 200+ HP fics recced, and those will give you a foundations of authors you might like and be able to find more of on AO3 and links to non-AO3 sites with more solid HP fic.

AO3 is amazing, and searching with a Kudos or bookmarks cut-off can yield great results in pretty much any fandom. But it’s not always going to be where to find the best fic for fandoms that preceded its existence. Even a lot of folks who are still active in fandom and have AO3 accounts still haven’t migrated all their older fic over for whatever reason. (God knows I haven’t.)

Polyamorous Recs: for your older fandom surfing pleasure (and still updating).

Cosigned. Shrift and Nestra are great (and omg I’ve known them over 10 years now).

Also, that I have lived to see a day when people COULD NOT EASILY FIND DECENT FLUFFY HP FIC. *weeps* I am so old, I swear circa 2005 that’s all there was on the entire internet, reams of 250k+ fic in all possible pairings.

(Victoria P/musesfool/cacchieressa also has a very long running and still maintained recs site)

Yes, this. A million times this.  At least once a month, I still dig into Poly Recs to read my favorite old gems from West Wing, Farscape, Alias, etc. And the misc section is truly a treasure trove.

Aww, you guys.

For those who don’t know, Nestra and I co-run Polyamorous Recs, which is somewhere around 13 years old and would be celebrating its coming of age if it were a human, so in internet years, it’s an ancient obelisk.

We still update it and fix broken links wherever possible to combat the heat death of the universe. There’s only two of us, so we can’t cover every fandom, but we do get around. And it’s worth attempting to recruit one of us into your fandom if you’re looking for fic to read because we’re still pretty skilled at turning over the internet and shaking it until good stories drop out of its pockets… and also skilled at complaining bitterly when the only thing that drops out is a lint-covered Life Savers in banana flavor.

Polyamorous Recs is so fab guys!

can a girl get some stevebucky fanfic recs I'm wading through shit while praying to god over here

gyzym:

okay so, with full disclosure that i am the single worst person on the face of the planet to ask for fic recs, because i almost never bookmark things or, indeed, remember the titles or authors of things i have read, HERE ARE SOME THINGS I AM LOVING OF LATE:

  • obviously, postcard’s Беда́ не прихо́дит одна́ (trouble never comes alone), which is the single best bucky barnes fic ever written in the history of time and which everyone should read, even though it’s not stevebucky except in the sense that it is a story about bucky, and thus inherently implies an eventual story about steve. basically: the winter soldier throughout history. [written pre-catws]
  • ALSO, postcard’s i’ve been in your body and it was a carnival ride, in which steve rogers has bucky barnes’s serial numbers underneath his skin in every conceivable sense. [written pre-catws.]
  • if you or anyone else has not yet read morgan’s we did not make ourselves, obviously also get on that post-haste. it is agony. it is pure. agony. [post catws]
  • SPEAKING OF AGONY, nat’s this is a back alley will make you want to claw your eyes out. SO MUCH AGONY. IN THIS FANDOM. SO ANGUISH. VERY DESPAIR. [post catws]
  • so, on the lighter side: ifeelbetter’s soft spot for the hell raisin’ boy, which is hilarious and adorable and has been my happy place for the last week or so. FROM SCRATCH OR NOT AT ALL. [post catws]
  • also adorable and h i l a r i o u s is erin’s selfies from the underground, which i have read at least six times already and which i have quoted to multiple real life people while trying to have conversations about catws, much to their confusion/dismay. [post catws]
  • i just read sholio’s the care and feeding of traumatized ex-assassins last night and really really enjoyed it; it’s basically bucky sneaking in and out of steve’s apartment like the most skittish/murderous stray cat of all time, and i think that’s beautiful. [post catws]

i’ve read a bunch of other good fic in this fandom but i don’t know where it is right now!! if i think of more i will post them, but in the meantime, i hope this helps :D :D :D

I would also like to rec Mistake on the Part of Nature. It’s hilarious, and Sam’s POV is the best POV.

Steve takes in Bucky’s betrayed look and Sam’s confusion, follows Sam’s gaze to the pile of mangled fruit in the trash can. Sudden comprehension fills his face.

"Oh," he says. "Bucky found out about bananas."

God Doesn’t Care, But We Do

Summary:

Dean Winchester finds himself the ring leader of a bunker full of freaks and geeks, all learning to make their way in a world that’s crumbling around them. To fix things, it’s this motley crew against Heaven, Hell, and the monsters inbetween… with Death more than a little irritated that God’s creations are causing a mess in the process. Dean doesn’t know whether to smile or punch something, but he does know that he’s right where he needs to be.

Notes:

Tags to be added as story is revealed. Alternate Season 9 storyline. Has similarities with canon-9 in the beginning, but will diverge into something completely different. Includes drabble and fluff. Mostly, just an action/adventure/character-building story. Updates the 1st and 15th of every month.

Chapter 1: On a Wing and a Prayer

My BFF wrote a fic, you guys! It’s a mostly gen adventure story with a huge cast; featuring a lot of ladies being BAMF, some angels trying not to be spineless dicks, and my favorite king of hell. It’s gonna be an EPIC ride.

Don’t be afraid of the WIP status! I can personally attest that she’s got, like, 10 chapters (nearly 40k words) written already so her updates are gonna run like clockwork. :)

@cellomanlove answered: Becoming Neville by Jedi Rita

Ok, so ON THE ONE HAND I’m very grateful to you for reccing this because I loved it. Oh my god, I don’t even remember the last fic I read where the characters were so deeply flawed and yet still likeable??? Because Neville is still a pushover and kind of a wimp, and Harry is self-absorbed dumbass with a bad temper, and Snape is horrible human being as always, and even Remus is reckless and way too easily convinced to let kids put themselves in danger. But Neville is also this amazing tragic figure with such potential for heroism, and Harry is this abused and traumatized kid who’s just trying to deal, and Snape actually does have other people’s best interests at heart he just has deeply fucked up priorities, and Remus has an upbringing that is even more abused and arguably more traumatizing than Harry’s. It’s all just, ugh. My feels.

On top of that amazing casefic where Neville’s investigating the mystery of his parent’s catatonia, and whether their doctor is secretly a deatheater, and what Bellatrix Lestrange is up to now. So great.

AND ON THE OTHER HAND I kind of hate you because there is no sequel. My heart weeps for another 50k of Harry and Snape becoming better people in spite of themselves due to close association with Neville and Remus. (Like, this is a gen fic but I am totally shipping it anyway.)

So, thank you for the rec. You monster.

"How far would you go for the life of one hobbit?"
After the Battle of Five Armies, Bilbo lies as still as death, and no earthly force will wake him. When a ghostly apparition offers Thorin the chance to recover Bilbo’s absent spirit from the underworld, he accepts without hesitation.
So begins the second Quest of Thorin’s lifetime.
Through half-remembered dreams and terrifying nightmares, beyond strange worlds to stranger shores, the Heirs of Durin will tirelessly, doggedly search for their burglar.
This is their task, their penance: find Bilbo, or else be condemned to wander forever more, never to return home.
(a His Dark Materials/The Hobbit AU)

This is such a great fic! It’s soooooo good, one of those WIPs that’s killing me softly with its song.
You can’t really tell by the summary, but this basically a story about Thorin (with Fili and Kili) traveling through parallel worlds and meeting all these different versions of Bilbo while looking for the spirit of his Bilbo. The first world is populated by people with daemons, but you don’t have to have read ‘His Dark Materials’ at all to understand what’s going on. And they get plagued by wraiths and awful visions when they’re traveling between worlds, it’s very creepy and awesome. A++ do recommend.
The latest world was one where the elves and dwarves get along, which thoroughly creeped out Thorin+co. ngl it was pretty great.

So I started reading Sansûkh for the (extremely well-written!) Thorin angst and dwarf culture porn, but now that it’s over twenty chapters in I find that my actual favorite part is how great Gimli is.

It doesn’t negate the events of the LotR movies, but instead uses the books (and Thorin’s POV) to flesh out his character more, so you can see how Gimli is this amazing noble warrior instead of just the comedic relief. It’s not an issue of what Legolas sees in him (as a bff or boyfriend) because you can’t imagine ANYONE not realizing what a stud this dwarf is. You get to the point where you kind of wonder what Gimli sees in Legolas— lbr, Legs is kind of an asshole, he doesn’t even write his own poetry or songs, he’s too skinny for dwarven tastes and fairly plain-looking among the elves.

In the fic, Legolas has only JUST realized that he has a thing for Gimli and I’m not ashamed to say that I’m praying for 10K of him angsting about how Gimli is out of his league.

A photoshop cover for Gus, because my hand is currently staging a mutiny and won’t draw.

Rebagel for the daystar peeps. I just realized I kept the title as “Erebor Park” instead of just “Erebor”…… I may fix that later.

No, but seriously you guys. REGENCY AU. And an au where Thorin really is hopeless with people and Bilbo has no fucks to give! I’m pretty sure Gus writes the best failwhale Thorin in existence.

robinade:

Going to The Hobbit midnight showing tonight!! In celebration of that fact, there are five fic recs below. Each one one is an absolute treasure and they are in a range of genres; angst, comedy, drama, adventure, and domestic.

Sansûkh by determamfidd

The battle was over, and Thorin Oakenshield awoke, naked and shivering, in the Halls of his Ancestors. The novelty of being dead fades quickly, and watching over his companions soon fills him with grief and guilt. Oddly, a faint flicker of hope arises in the form of his youngest kinsman, a Dwarf of Durin’s line with bright red hair.

(Follows the story of the War of the Ring).

(Bagginshield, Gimli/Legolas) In which recovery takes time, the dead members of the Company take to watching Gimli as though he’s a soap opera, the living struggle with being left behind, Legolas is confused, Khuzdul is abused, and Thorin is four feet and ten inches of guilt and anger.

Be prepared to have tissues. I cried in pretty much every chapter, but I still love this fic enough to have re-read it twice. Angst abounds because Thorin is full of guilt for succumbing to the gold-lust— but it’s a good angst? Because he’s growing as a person and overcoming his flaws, even if it didn’t happen until after he died. Amazing depiction of the dwarvish afterlife, which has basically become my headcanon. WIP and the slow-burniest slow-burn of Thorin/Bilbo since the war of the ring isn’t even over yet and I’m dying to find out what happens when Bilbo sails off to Valinor. Also, Gimli is the best. Everyone agrees.

Beneath the Ever-Bending Sky
 by Leupagus

When Thorin summons the company to the Lesser Hall and Bilbo explains what she wants done, there is a long silence, followed by thunderous argument.

“I suppose we shouldn’t have expected better,” Bilbo mutters as Óin and Dwalin bellow at each other.

It’s typical, Thorin thinks, and is disgusted with himself for the rush of fondness he feels.

Rule 63 Bilbo, who has some demands to make of her husband Thorin. This fic has my favorite pov with Thorin being terrifyingly fond of Bilbo and completely subject to her whims, to his unending frustration. It has a fantastic full cast of characters, including Thorin’s sister Dís, Tauriel, and Legolas. Also life-and-death struggles re: the One Ring. If I were to quote my favorite parts, I’d end up copy/pasting the whole fic. But this section I think accurately sums up Bilbo and Thorin’s relationship:

“I thought we just settled this,” Thorin protests, because the first words she’s written in the strange, rounded letters of the halflings are “To The Most Gracious Lord.” Whenever she writes to Bard she starts it with “To the Great Bowman” and when she writes to Dain (which Thorin would very much like to forbid) it is always “My Dear Friend and Cousin” (which Thorin would very much more like to forbid).

“No, you whined at me for a bit and I am inviting him anyway,” Bilbo replies, and Thorin goes to find Glóin — acting as guard-captain in Dwalin’s absence — to see about increasing the number of highly visible weapons each ceremonial guard can get away with carrying during the festivities.

Clarity of Vision
by mithen

In a Middle-Earth where Erebor never fell, a shadow remains in the heart of the Lonely Mountain. Bilbo Baggins finds himself drawn reluctantly into a quest that will lead him across the continent—from Bree to Lake Evendim to the icy North and beyond—with a party of five dwarves searching for an artifact that will cure the ailing King Thrór.

Quite an adventure story, for all that Thorin is going from library to library in research for a cure to gold-lust to save his family, instead of a quest to Erebor. They end up traveling from Fornost in the fallen kingdom of Arnor to the island of Himring in the Great Sea, to Lothlorien, and now, at last, the Shire itself. Utterly DELIGHTFUL characterization— seriously, Bilbo strikes an absolutely perfect balance between traditional hobbit sensibilities and hidden reserves of bravery. Thorin is a jerk who makes really horrible first impressions, and his bad behavior is never excused because of a tragic backstory like it is in a lot of fics, but he and Bilbo become friends in spite of themselves. Everything is amazing and epic (and Thorin gets a hold of the One Ring and asdfghjkl I don’t want to spoil it but how that works out and how Thorin overcomes it is flawless).

This fic has almost everything I ever wanted; a crazy slow burn with Thorin and Bilbo getting to know each other (still no makeouts I am dying here), Thorin teaching Bilbo khuzdul, Thorin speaking the elvish language but not happy about it, a good understanding of the geography of Middle Earth, Thorin overcoming the gold-lust without the cure (though I spent several chapters wanting to shout at the characters, it’s a fucking flower!)

WIP, but the latest chapter isn’t a cliffhanger and feels somewhat resolved.

(Un)Familiar Ground
by The Feels Whale (miscellea)

The Shire is spread out at Bilbo’s feet like a green duvet that stretches out as far as the eye can see. The air is full of birdsong and the indistinct murmur of a small town; conversation, laughter, and squabbling all blending together into a single cohesive whole.

‘Is this the undying land?’ Bilbo wonders and pinches himself. It feels real. It feels too real. If feels… familiar.

The BEST time travel fix-it fic EVER WRITTEN. Bilbo is smart and utterly determined and Thorin is both irritated and bemused by this wee hobbit that won’t be intimidated by him or anyone else. And aside from FLAWLESS CHARACTERIZATION I also really love this fic because it’s not just a rehash of canon elements— Bilbo was sent back for a purpose, and he’s not the only one to have memories of a life once lived. Things start to happen very differently right from the beginning.

WIP that is killing me because when it last left off GIMLI SHOWED UP and I’m cry.

The Road Delivered Us Home
 by keelywolfe

In the years since Bilbo left Erebor, he has lost his respectability, gained a nephew, and gotten on with life at Bag End.

He’d left aside adventure for the comforts and peace of his little Hobbit hole, and for the love of a child who needed him. Though perhaps, adventures can yet find him.

Everyone Thorin lives au! Bilbo has adopted Frodo when Thorin and Dwalin come visiting, and stay for several months. Domestic fluff and humor that is so unbelievably good for my soul, you have no idea. Featuring Thorin that is exasperatedly fond of Bilbo and Frodo, and Dwalin being both good with wee hobbits and completely unimpressed with Thorin’s majesty, and also clothing porn when Bilbo takes Thorin to his tailor. Bilbo/Thorin plus a hilarious Dwalin/suprise pairing. Give me all the fics with Thorin reading books from the Bag End library and taking naps in the parlor and helping Bilbo in the garden! /grabby hands
